Very Happy with the Nesco FD-80 Dehydrator
December 11,2011

Very happy with purchase. Received this unit, the Nesco/American Harvest FD-80 Square-Shaped Dehydrator, a few weeks ago. Made several batches of venison jerky with it, turned out very good! For those concerned about the noise level I would compare it to a box fan on low speed (not noisy at all). Bought this model because it was square and would be best suited for the jerky strips and also the temperature can be adjusted for what you are drying. I do recommend checking the process for doneness every 10-15 min or so the last hour especially when getting use to the unit. The trays that came with it held approximately 5lbs of raw meat. Easy to use and easy to clean up. I would recommend this to family and friends. This was a birthday gift for my son, an avid hunter, who wanted me to pass along this review. I plan to dry fruits and vegetables with it when deer season is over.

Happy Hunter and Hiker

Cheap trail snacks and home made jerky, mean you'll save big and have better quality.

The square trays give more drying room but it doesn't take up much more storage space in your cupboards than a round dehydrator. I sold my round old one right after getting this one. I bought an extra 2 trays and the fruit roll trays. I dry ragu and cooked pasta and mix a little dry TVP in for a very easy, tasty trail meal that re-hydrates with a cup and a half of hot water. Salsa dries well as does most any sauce. I really like the commercial dried meals but they are expensive. You'll save 3-6 bucks each time you dry a meal yourself and don't have a mountain house. With that formula alone it wont take long for an avid backpacker to pay for the dehydrator in savings.

As a hunter I can jerky my own meat too. There something very satisfying about knowing the meat you eat was killed humanely, lived free and wild and is totally organically fed. To then preserve it yourself is just the next step for me. This past season I snacked on dried apple rings and mango slices while out hunting. The apple is the easiest thing to do, just peel core slice (3/8s thick), dip in orange juice (with ascorbic acid to prevent browning) and place on trays to dry. Cheap dollar store orange juice usually has a high ascorbic acid level so is a cheap, easy source. It imparts a nice flavor too. The mango is way better than store bought, not covered in tons of sugar and tastes far more mangoey. Aging fruit and leftover pieces from slices are blended smooth with a little orange juice and poured on the trays to make fruit leather. It's like vegetarian jerky and my veggie friends like it. It's nice to have something to share with them on the trail. Just set the heat to mid level and a timer for 6-8 hours and you're done.

I use a simple cheap timer that allows me to set and forget. It also solves the power switch issue that some are not happy about. My timer has a power switch so problem solved. I usually set for 6-8 hours and go to bed. In the morning if it needs more drying I can guess how much, set the timer and go to work. Because it's dried it will sit till I get home and not go bad.

This dehydrator is cheap, easy and recommended.

Great Dehydrator

December 10, 2011

I bought this dehydrator about 6 months ago to replace a 20+ year old model that finally quit on me. I must say that I have been quite impressed with this one compared to the old (sorry, but I don't remember the brand/model). I primarily used the old dehydrator to finish drying jerky after an hour or so in the smoker. The dehydrator does a much better job of drying the meat completely without worry of turning the tasty morsels into over-smoked charcoal. And no, liquid smoke is not an option for me. Anyway, this dehydrator dries meat in less than half the time of my old one! Plus, the fan is on the top of this one, so nothing drips down into it, which was probably what finally killed the old one. I was so impressed with this dehydrator that I decided to branch out and try some of the dried fruit and fruit roll-up recipes (included). They are simple, and my daughter LOVES them for snacks. Just be sure to spray the plastic rings with oil; otherwise, it is impossible to peel them off. Learned that the hard way. We've also made banana chips, dried cowhorn peppers and even shrimp jerky. Yep, shrimp jerky. Just spread small cooked, peeled and deveined shrimp out on the trays and sprinkle with Cajun seasoning. After about 2 hours or so, you will have a surprisingly good treat. If you over-dry them, just put a slice of bread in a plastic bag with the shrimp and they will soften up a bit.

As other reviewers have stated, an on/off switch seems like it should be included but isn't. Oh, well. Just plug it in, and it starts. Other than that, I can't think of anything negative to post. Good product at a good price. Buy it; you'll enjoy the simplicity of it and the delicious dried foods.

Almost Perfect

December 9, 2011

I looked at dehydrators for days before settling on the Nesco. Chose it because of the high wattage heater and the fan / air circulation system as well as expandability. Delivery was great, as usual from Amazon, and product performs wonderfully. We have dried fruits and pumkin seeds so far and we love it. It sits on the kitchen counter while drying and is so quiet you have to stand next to it to tell its running. Adjustable heat setting works well. Only reason for 4 stars is the lact of a switch. You have to unplug it to stop it. A switch would be nice to have , especially when checking progress of drying. Air circulation allows food at all levels to dry equally so no shuffling and restacking is required. I would recommend this to anyone.

Customer said : "Solid, well built, does the job"

Details :

"This was my first venture into dehydrating foods. After reading all of the reviews I made my choice to go with the Excalibur brand. I have been extremely pleased with the ease with which it works and the product it produces.

With the fan in the back, all of the fruit and vegetables placed on a single tray appear to be drying at the same speed so there is no need to rotate the tray from front to back, However, I have found that when I have all 5 trays loaded, I need to rotate the trays vertically. I move the top tray to the bottom and each tray up one slot. I usually will only do this a couple of times in a 12 hour period. As the fruit and vegetables get smaller from dehydration the air is able to circulate better.

The 5 tray size has been all we have needed so far but I could see a time down the road that I might have need for the 9 tray."

Customer said: "I love this dehydrator"

Details :

"I had a round donut model, but recently borrowed this model from a friend. I really like the excalabur configuration better. If you are moving it from cupboard to counter, the stack of trays don't fall. It's much easier to spread puree to make fruit leather and you don't need to buy special round mats. A lamp timer with a grounded outlet is helpful. I rotate trays front to back, but this isn't a big deal. I do wish it was a bit less pricey though.
My favorite? -- "Banana Slugs" ( ie bananas cut in half and then quartered lengthwise into sticks.) They take longer than banana leather but turn into virtual sugar bombs. Has anyone tried yogurt? Are the trays strong enough to handle yogurt cups?"

Review About This Product:

I had a Ronco dehydrator and needed to move up. I work all week and could only prepare foods to dry on the weekend. We get an organic farm share each week and my family was having trouble eating and processing it all before the next batch arrived. Once I got the Excalibur 9 tray, I was able to get all of my food dried with NO LOSS OF BATCHES. This thing has a thermostat and fan instead of relying on convection alone, so it works much more quickly. Now my family has gone RAW, and we make all sorts of food in the Excalibur. We use it several times per week and it is plainly AWESOME!!! This is what you need if you are really serious about drying foods or eating raw. Don't mess around - get the 9 tray and make BIG batches and save a lot of time.

Review From Buyer:

I've had my Excalibur for a while now and use it on a regular basis. Before purchasing it, I tried several of the round type, including the Gardenmaster. This dehydrator beats the round variety as it has the side fan and adjustable thermostat. The side fan means you very rarely have to rotate trays and it cuts the drying time. The Excalibur is also much easier to clean than the round dehydrators. Besides using it for drying food, I take the trays out and use it to raise bread and make yogurt. Don't bother with the 5 tray version - you'll wish you had went for the 9 tray instead. The added height inside the 9 tray makes it easy to use for raising a bowl of bread dough.
