Great Dehydrator

December 10, 2011

I bought this dehydrator about 6 months ago to replace a 20+ year old model that finally quit on me. I must say that I have been quite impressed with this one compared to the old (sorry, but I don't remember the brand/model). I primarily used the old dehydrator to finish drying jerky after an hour or so in the smoker. The dehydrator does a much better job of drying the meat completely without worry of turning the tasty morsels into over-smoked charcoal. And no, liquid smoke is not an option for me. Anyway, this dehydrator dries meat in less than half the time of my old one! Plus, the fan is on the top of this one, so nothing drips down into it, which was probably what finally killed the old one. I was so impressed with this dehydrator that I decided to branch out and try some of the dried fruit and fruit roll-up recipes (included). They are simple, and my daughter LOVES them for snacks. Just be sure to spray the plastic rings with oil; otherwise, it is impossible to peel them off. Learned that the hard way. We've also made banana chips, dried cowhorn peppers and even shrimp jerky. Yep, shrimp jerky. Just spread small cooked, peeled and deveined shrimp out on the trays and sprinkle with Cajun seasoning. After about 2 hours or so, you will have a surprisingly good treat. If you over-dry them, just put a slice of bread in a plastic bag with the shrimp and they will soften up a bit.

As other reviewers have stated, an on/off switch seems like it should be included but isn't. Oh, well. Just plug it in, and it starts. Other than that, I can't think of anything negative to post. Good product at a good price. Buy it; you'll enjoy the simplicity of it and the delicious dried foods.

Almost Perfect

December 9, 2011

I looked at dehydrators for days before settling on the Nesco. Chose it because of the high wattage heater and the fan / air circulation system as well as expandability. Delivery was great, as usual from Amazon, and product performs wonderfully. We have dried fruits and pumkin seeds so far and we love it. It sits on the kitchen counter while drying and is so quiet you have to stand next to it to tell its running. Adjustable heat setting works well. Only reason for 4 stars is the lact of a switch. You have to unplug it to stop it. A switch would be nice to have , especially when checking progress of drying. Air circulation allows food at all levels to dry equally so no shuffling and restacking is required. I would recommend this to anyone.
